Located 200km south of St Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod (Novgorod the Great) is one of the most ancient and historic cities in Russia. It was founded on the banks of the Volkhov river, 6 km North from Lake Ilmen. The city is famous for its Kremlin, the oldest in Russia (864 A.D), and for its stunning medieval churches, cathedrals and monuments.
Located 700km south-east of St Petersburg, Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia. World famous for its Red Square, Kremlin and the colorful domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, the city is a major political, economic and cultural center in Russia. Full of history, Moscow is home to many museums, monuments and offers a vibrant cultural life.
A village with more than 1000 years of history, Staraya Ladoga attracts with its medieval fortress, ancient churches, monasteries and picturesque landscapes. Located 128km to the east of St Petersburg, not far from where the Volkhov river falls in lake Ladoga, Staraya Ladoga was an important port on the medieval trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks.
Located 300 km southwest of St Petersburg, Pskov, on the Velikaya River and smaller Pskova river, is one of the oldest city in Russia (around 903 A.D). According to the legend, the first Russian Cathedral - The Trinity Cathedral - was built in Pskov, under the patronage of Princess Olga before the baptism of Rus. The city is famous for its religious architecture (churches, cathedrals, monasteries) and its Kremlin (Pskov Krom). In July 2019, the churches of the Pskov School of Architecture were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
