Located 200km south of St Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod (Novgorod the Great) is one of the most ancient and historic cities in Russia. It was founded on the banks of the Volkhov river, 6 km North from Lake Ilmen. The city is famous for its Kremlin, the oldest in Russia (864 A.D), and for its stunning medieval churches, cathedrals and monuments. Nearby to the city, in a snowy forest, the open-air museum of wooden architecture Vitoslavlitsy recreates the life of an old traditional Russian village.
Located 700km south-east of St Petersburg, Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia. World famous for its Red Square, Kremlin and the colorful domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, the city is a major political, economic and cultural center in Russia. Full of history, Moscow is home to many museums, monuments and offers a vibrant cultural life that doesn't slow down even in winter.
Located in the center of Lake Onega, in Karelia, Kizhi is a small island mostly famous for its 22-dome wooden church (the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior), a true masterpiece built without using a single nail. The island is also home to an open-air museum of history, architecture and ethnography, dedicated to wooden architecture and life in ancient Russia. In February the island gets magical with its snowy paths, snowdrifts and frozen lake.
